Greetings from St. Petersburg

привет!

My week has been rather busy, but very nice so far. On Tuesday I organized the IC Culture Tour, which got good feedback about being a great alternative for partying and drinking. Especially for foreign students it was nice to see some culture and history of Jyväskylä. We visited the Harju observation tower, and we could see the whole city from there! We found our school and even Roninmäki. After it we visited two museums: The Art Museum of Jyväskylä and the Museum of Central Finland. In the Art Museum there was e.g. an interesting exhibition of Olli Marttila's works. He is not a well-known artist, but a good one. In the Museum of Central Finland the most interesting exhibition for me was the one about the history of Jyväskylä. It was interesting to see how the city was formed and how it has been in different decades.

All of the museums in Jyväskylä are free of charge on Fridays, so Friday is a good day to visit them.

Wednesday was full of thesis writing and packing. I was happy to notice the progress in the thesis. It is getting clearer all the time and is not a blurry mess anymore. I have a feeling that it will get ready at some point!

On Thursday I had a minute schedule for the morning. Our buses left for Helsinki at noon and before that I had a meeting, where we planned the next IC After Hours, after which I had promised to take my friend to work. From there I drove back to home to take my bags and leave the car. Luckily I was in time at Matkakeskus. So was everybody else. I wanna thank all the co-travelers, because we could leave on time. I have to admit that I was a bit surprised. Only in a good way.

At the West Terminal in Helsinki we hopped on M/S Princess Maria that took us to St. Petersburg. After visiting a duty-free some people partied a little, some a little more. However, in the following morning everybody made it to Russia. And still we are here, having a good time! Yesterday we had a nice city tour with our awesome guides, who showed us the most important attractions in the city. The sea breeze was freezing cold! The weather here hasn't been too good. We missed the first snow in Jyväskylä, but experienced it here. Beside it it has been raining cats and dogs.

After the tour I went to have a dinner in a traditional Russian restaurant with a big group of Finnish, English and German students. Food there was delicious and it was only less than 20 euros, even though I had a three course meal. And all of a sudden two young ladies with traditional costumes appeared and started to dance in traditional Russian style. Excellent place!

After the dinner we went for a night cruise on the rivers and canals of the city. Even though it was freezing cold, it was amazing. This city is so beautiful! Especially when it's dark and all the palaces are lighted beautifully and you are dancing on a small boat with your friends and sparkling wine.

Today we visited the Catherine's Palace. It's another amazing building from the 18th century. It's a well known summer residence of the Russian royal family with huge golden and amber rooms, one after another. It was something that we don't see every day.

On our way back, there was an enormous traffic jam, which is to my understanding quite common in here. Russian drivers are crazy and do not care much about rules, such as speed limits or lanes. On a big highway with eight lanes there were three broken cars just left there in the middle of the way. What usually takes something like 10 minutes, took now way more than half an hour. Big hand to our brave driver who finally got us safely back to the hotel.

Now I'm back at the hotel, having some rest before tonight's limousine tour. I'm pretty excited about it!

We'll come back on Monday. See you then! до свидания!
